BAMONTE PHOTOS

These are but a few of the thousands of photos with captions collected and shown in the variety of books written and published by Tony and Suzanne Bamonte. The first two images depict pertinent information on the authors and publications. The quality of workmanship is beyond compare. Granting the CDPHS permission for inclusion on our Website leaves us abundently indebted. Thank you Tony and Suzanne Bamonte

Many additional volumes have been added since the first edition published in 1999

This Website leads to all publications available to date.

From the Tornado Creek Publications edition of "Spokane and the Inland Northwest Historical Images." There are 766 photos in this coffee table edition alone. The History of Spokane Falls to points in all direction fell under the protection of the Military. Strangley the Missionaries, Fur Trappers and Miners had little need for protction from the Tribes. But as Buffalo Hunters and huge wagon Trains made thier way across the open spaces the it dawned on the Indians, The invasion was in full force.

A little over a century ago Highway 395 was nothing more than a logging road leading into Clayton and on to all points of the compass in the Inland (Empire) Northwest by Tony & Suzanne Bamonte. North from here are points of interest, many and frequent. One being the Hudson Bay Trading post established in 1826 whch was almost 50 years prior to the settlement of Spokane in 1874 and 70 years before Deer Park and Clayton.

Meyer's Falls, now Kettle Falls was early on a Hudson Bay Fur trading Settlement. The Company built what was called a Grist Mill, grinding grains of all nature from corn wheat etc. All the while living peacably with the Indian Tribes. At least for the most part.

Springdale, a neat little town just outside the Reservation, circa 1915.

Valley, WA, a thriving farming community in mid "Inland Northwest." A point of interest, the Bamontes refer to this location as Allen's Camp. Clayton was originally Allen's Siding. A connection or coincidence?

Deer Park, Clayton, Loon Lake, Springdale, Valley and Chewelah were all born simultaneously when the Great Northern Railroad made its run for the Canadian Border after 1889 as stated by Editor Suzanne Bamonte of the Tornado Creek Publications.

Spokane Falls had sprung to life 20 years prior to Mr. Corbins venture north with his Railroad. Thus began a crossroads in the lives of Homestead Pioneers. Ranchers, Loggers and even shopkeepers joined ranks in the greatest migration in the History of our mighty nation and Clayton Washington was one of them.

Bull, bison or both by the Bamontes.

Tony Bamonte states, "A montage of modes of Transportation." Also please take note of the upper far right vehicle. It operates on four sled runners and propelled by the two cogged rear wheels in snow only.

In Pend Oreille County the towns of Cusick and Usk are separated by about 3 miles. Both towns are located on the west bank of the Pend Oreille River and both are former logging towns.

Usk and Cusick are still active commuities. Although in the 1940s Cusick had a 2 block long string of businesses including the mercantile pictured in the Cusick photo. Today that business filled Main street is no more. Every one of those buildings has been demolished. The life blood of the community, the saw mill, is gone too and no more log booms line the shore of the river.

Addy, a town named after a lady, on US Highway 395 leading to the Canadian Border.

Pend Oreille County is in the northeastern corner of Washington and is both rugged and beautiful. People from all walks of life reside here, The county contains Indian reservations and many lakes with good fishing and forests with good hunting. As recent as the 1940s you could stand on the banks of the mighty Pend Oreille River and see Indian women scrubbing clothes on the rocks on the east side. One could also cross the river at Usk and camp out at Skookum Creek and fish the streams or lakes and never see another soul all weekend.

For many of us, this will be our favorite picture in this album. It is not likely here by accident in a Bamonte book.

Alfred and Mae Schaeffer raised their family in the bustling little town of Metaline Falls. One daughter's name was Suzanne who married Tony Bamonte and is a co-author of this book.

One will never forget the smell of a harness shop.

It seams life was not particularly easy in Metaline Falls, it was clean, neat and the folks grew up decent.

Keller, Washington in Ferry County near Lake Roosevelt.

Fur Trading, Mining, Agriculture and Logging. We had it all and made the best of it.

Curlew, Washington located in Ferry County on the Kettle River near the Canadian border.

Kettle Falls, A nice sized northern town.

Credit is also given to the original source of the particular photo by the Bamontes as well as the CDPHS.

Prior to 1862 the town of Marcus was Canadian. A dispute erupted between the US and Canada. The border was resurveyed and Marcus came into Washington.

METALINE FALLS, photographed from a mountain side in 1986.

Every photo and caption shown in the photos are from Mr. Tony and Mrs. Suzanne Bamonte.

Metaline Falls in 1920. Many towns begin in a shambles and remain as such. A very few start with an organized platt and hold to the ordinances. Metaline Falls did just that. It seems the Bamonte's are more than co-operative with those of us interested in preserving local lore.

Through a great deal of persistance it is hoped that this image pleases all who view it. If any photo is capable of taking you back, just view this one. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Bamonte where ever you are.
