This Honor Roll of our Service men was in the front window of the Clayton Mercantile. Removed only long enough to add more name by the gentle hands of Mrs. Ruth Stelting.

Tranquil Clayton 1940 or 1941. All is right with the world.

In the years prior to WW I peace and tranquillity reigned.

SILVIO COSTA. USMC. WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA.. The exploits of this war Hero are renowned. A marine who fought behind Enemy lines with Carlsons Raiders on Makin, Guadalcanal, Midway & Bouganville the South Pacific. It is unlikely he ever totally recovered from the traumatic experience. Home on leave but still fighting a battle on some distant shore.

ART STELTING. USMC. WW II, VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON Wa. Clayton Art Stelting commanded a beach landing craft, during the invasion of Bougainville, Guam & Iwo Jima. Art claims he had the best job in the Marine Corps, even though every enemy heavy artillery piece was trained on him.

AL RENNER. WW II VET, US NAVY. W T 1/c Home Town - Clayton Wa. He spent 26 months in the Atlantic and Pacific.

HARRY NESS.WW II Veteran. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. From the Class of ‘42. He now lives in Spokane. Peter Coffin got one of the most prized photos ever of Big Foot Valley from Harry. It included the old Big Foot Valley School. Priceless! Thanks for your service to your Country, Harry, plus the BFVS.

LYLE NORD. WW II VET. UNITED STAES ARMY. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON Wa. Cousin to Carl Lindh, older Brother of Warren. He came home, married and had 2 little girls. One is the Society’s insurance agent.

CARL LINDH. WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA.Took time out for his country, came home, and lived the rest of his life in Clayton, WA.

ORLAND LUHR. USAAC. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. DIED IN ACTION. You can follow the life of Orland Luhr in the story by Alvin Tuffy Luhr in ISSUE 10 and subsequent issues of the Mortarboard above.

ALVIN 'TUFFY' LUHR, US ARMY WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Told his war and life’s story beginning in ISSUE 10 of CDPHS Mortarboard. This is a rare occurrence from a military man.

BURTON STEWART. USAAC. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Son of H.B. and Emma Stewart of Clayton, served in the Army Air Corps from October 7, 1942 to October 10, 1945. He ran a radio transmitter on air fields at Chico and Santa Rosa California. Burton and Leno Prestini were sidekicks, and they served their country well. This picture was probably taken on his last furlough.

GLENN KING USAAC. WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Younger Brother of Clayton's Walt King, entered the Army Air Corps as a photographer flying in B 24s & B25s. He filmed the surrender of the Japanese forces on Okinawa.

LENO PRISTINI. WW II VET USAAC. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Was stationed in Denver, CO, and England. One of his assignments was painting insignias on airplane fuselages.

TOM SCRIVIN. WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Brother to Ray, Uncle to Carl Lindh and Lyle & Warren Nord. WW II Veteran.

IRA DAVIS. WW II VET. HOME TOWN CLAYTON WA. Was in the United States Army during WW II. He was one tough cookie. So tough that he Married Helen Young.

MILES KING. USAAC.WW II VET. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. Entered the service towards the final months of the war. While training in the 4th Air Force as Heavy Bombardment Pilot it was determined he was to high strung. So they put him in as TAIL GUNNER. That should have calmed him down a lot. Fortunately for Germany they surrendered before Miles was turned loose on them.

MSgt. Kenneth W. Kelso, Son of Harriet & Edward Kelso of Big Foot Valley. Compliments of Charles Stewart, son of Burton and Linda Kelso Stewart and nephew to Kenneth Kelso. Before the war Kenneth was a close friend of Burton Stewart, who later became his brother-in-law. They had done a lot of expedition-skiing on Calispel Peak, Mt. Boyer, and Mt. Spokane along with Leno Prestini and others. Kenneth was in the Army from 1942 -1946, stationed in Hawaii, Samoa, New Mexico & Greenland.

H. P. Norseth, 1905 - 1990. DPHS Graduate, US Navy, WW II. He is an uncle to and compliments of Ken Westby.

United States Naval Veteran of WW II. Alan and the Berg family paid dearly with the loss of Alan's Brother Lee Berg. Alan is now a member of CDPHS.

Frank Richards with help from his Daughter Amanda O'connell now residing in Northern Oregon were able to trace Frank's WW II war buddy down through our Webpages of Deer Park Graduates. Though dissapointed to learn his friend was gone he was grateful to relive his experiences with Leonords Cousin, Karen Renner Meyer. He and Leonord were Turrett Gunners on B24s stationed out of Itally. .

A piece of History by Ruth & Jim Stelting’s son, Clayton Arthur Stelting. Please take time to read. Art operated a heavy equipment landing barge. He claims he had the best job in the Marines. We know he got the most attention from the enemy heavy artillery. Art came home unscathed.

Kenneth Lewis, oldest son of Hayes & Elva Lewis of Clayton's Big Foot Valley, WW II Vet, and a veteran of babysitting 13 younger siblings. He joined the war effort because he needed a rest.

CLAYTON ARTHUR STELTING USMC. HOME TOWN - CLAYTON WA. WW II VET. A much more recent picture of Art Stelting is shown at the top right hand side of this page. Art is the son Ruth and Jim Stelting. They waited for him and prayed for his safe return home. By the Grace of God, this Clayton native son did just that.

Robert 'Bob' Lewis, U.S. Navy veteran of WW II.

Charles Joe Henry, WW II Veteran, Home town - Clayton Wa. USAAC, Was stationed in India in 1944. He served as a Flight Engineer over the hump to China.
